TEAM OF THE WEEK

Ruby Anderson

Meet Ruby, a 3-year-old Standard Poodle who is a registered Pet Partners therapy animal team with her handler Lisa Anderson in San Marino, California. When the Andersons' daughter was a child, she was a frequent hospital patient due to a medical condition. Visits from therapy animals always helped calm and cheer her, so when Ruby demonstrated her sweet nature Lisa knew she wanted to give back by volunteering with Ruby at a children's hospital. Lisa shared with us her most memorable experience:

"The patient was a young girl with multiple injuries from head to toe. She did not seem to notice us. Both parents and a sibling were with her. Emotions in the room were palpable: anxiety, worry, fear, sadness.
As I chatted with the family, Ruby would not budge. She did not move a muscle, simply stared at the patient. The child turned her head and locked eyes with Ruby. For several minutes all was silent as we watched what was taking place, understanding there was something profound transpiring between the two.

The child's father said that turning to look at Ruby was his daughter’s first movement since surgery. Tears were shed and gratitude expressed.

It was a profound experience. I learned from Ruby how much can be said when no words are exchanged."
